June Events

Little Canada, Dundas Square, Toronto

Review

At the end of June ten Probians enjoyed a wonderful visit to Little Canada. Little Canada is a remarkable combination of detailed miniature buildings, people, and scenic backgrounds representing parts of Canada. Enhanced by sights and background sounds of birds, waterfalls, traffic and fireworks (!) with lighting changing to show scenes in both daylight and at night, a truly magical experience was created. Although the recommended visit was ninety minutes, we stayed for over two hours and would have stayed longer had sensory saturation and hunger not caused us to leave! Following our visit we walked over to the Queen and Beaver Public House for lunch on their roof top garden. A perfect ending to a lovely day.

Whistling Gardens

Review
On Wednesday, June 15, ten PROBUS members in private cars set out for Brantford, or rather western Ontario. With the help of GPS, and our thanks to the drivers, all arrived safely at Whistling Gardens, on time to start the tour. It was a beautiful day (apart from the heat) when we started the tour guided by the owner, with Lego his dog, plus two other
garden enthusiasts.
Back in 2012, this was 22 acres of corn field and the dream of one man and his wife. Now it is a paradise of gardens, ever changing with the seasons in an area known as Wilsonville.
Our first attraction was the newly created fountain amphitheatre where 120 water jets are choreographed to original music. Chairs are set out for a relaxing and entertaining eleven minutes. A longer show is promised for later this year. We then wandered along the path and over the bridge, our eyes delighted by all the wondrous sights around. We asked the questions, the guide provided the answers, plus details, with fatherly love. His primary love is trees, and a large area is devoted to the conifer garden. We were making our way to the peony garden, but on route passed the conifer, rock, and the cactus gardens which were
blooming. The peony garden is one of the larger gardens and of course was at its best the day we visited. It is a small site in the context of the property.
I say this to encourage everyone to visit such a venue at any time except winter. The gardens are wheelchair accessible, there is plenty of seating and some prepackaged food and beverages are available, or bring your own picnic but do not bring your pooch. Certified Guide Dogs, only, are allowed. Cameras were constantly clicking and I hope there will be plenty of photos to accompany my words. There were still gardens to be viewed on our own, but it was agreed to visit the local pub, as I think we were all tired and in need of liquid refreshment. Gillian had booked lunch at the Gibbled Goose, (no spelling error) where we enjoyed an extensive menu and a most welcoming hostess. I leave you word lovers to decipher the name of the pub.
To conclude it was an enjoyable, enlightening, memorable outing, and I am ready to return in another season.

SPRING CAR DRIVE MAY 11, 2022

Last October we held a Fall Colour Drive which seemed to be enjoyed by all participants. This has led to requests to also have a Spring Car drive. The Credit River PROBUS Club now invites you to participate in a drive on Wednesday, May 11 with the choice of a lunch or bring you own picnic at our final destination.

The route will start at Tim Hortons/Shell Station, South Service Road and Mississauga Road. This is the opposite side of the QEW to the Mississauga Golf and Country Club. It will be a 10:00 am morning start and we will wend our way by a circuitous route to a lunch stop in the Niagara area, most likely Port Dalhousie. There will be a health needs break during the drive.

Please contact Gillian if you wish to participate (crp.events@yahoo.com) and we will send you a required waiver form to send in.

Winter Festival of Lights (13 November – February 21, 2022)

The most enchanting of Niagara Falls attractions, the 39th annual Ontario Power Generation Winter Festival of Lights is Canada’s largest FREE outdoor light festival. Experience the spectacular displays with 3 million lights along the Niagara Parkway, Dufferin Islands and across Niagara Falls. NEW FOR 2021: The Festival will illuminate Niagara Falls for 101 Nights, almost doubling the amount of time you can discover the winter magic of twinkling lights and larger than life displays.

November Event

  • A guided walking tour of the Islington murals

  • On a chilly, but dry November day, 33 of our PROBUS members met at Montgomery’s Inn to start a walking tour of the Islington Village murals. These 28 murals are amazing paintings situated along and around Dundas Street and illustrate the history of the village, starting in the early 1800’s through to Hurricane Hazel and more recent times. Some paintings were huge and covered the side of buildings, others were on store fronts and even along the wall of a bridge. Beside each mural is a plaque explaining the story of the painting and its place in history. Our guide, Corrine was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
We all agreed the murals are quite spectacular and marveled at how talented the artists who created them were. Well worth a return visit, although maybe when the weather warms up.

Enjoy these photos and history of the murals!

Fall Colour Driving Tour Report

Thursday October 7, 2021, some 23 Credit River PROBUS members, drivers and navigators in 11 cars
assembled at the Tim Hortons, Mississauga Road and South Service Road for a 10:00 am start to our Fall Colour Drive. After a short briefing by the lead navigator, myself, the 11 cars set off with one primary objective: the Coffee/Bio Break Pit Stop in Caledon, which was reached after about 75 minutes. The first part of the route
took us on the outskirts of Brampton and then through Norval, Belfountain & Cataract to Caledon. Many of the trees were in full colour especially between Belfountain and Cataract.

Leaving Caledon, we then made our circuitous way on more twisty and hilly roads through Hockley Valley, Glen Cross, Violet Hill, Primrose, Terra Nova and Redickville and saw many magnificent colourful trees on the way to our final destination Mylar & Loreta’s Restaurant in Singhampton for lunch. There was some spacing between arrivals the first being at 1:00 pm and some others not until 1:25 pm but everybody made it eventually. The restaurant had organised us into three tables, which enabled good social interaction between the members, and lunch was served promptly. The run distance was about 160 kilometers.

The reaction to the event seems to be good, followed by requests that we include this and other lunch drives in future programs.

Take the weekend GO Train from Toronto to Niagara Falls!

Whether you are travelling solo or with family or friends, the GO & WEGO combination gives you more value. WEGO provides a great way to explore the beauty of both the Niagara River and the Falls, as well as downtown attractions, at your own pace. There are 3 WEGO lines to choose from, each travelling to a variety of attractions. The GO/Niagara Parks Commission combo ticket is only $25.00 per person or $62.50 per group (includes 2 adults and 3 kids, or 1 adult and 4 kids) from Union Station, Port Credit or Oakville and you can pre-buy your combo tickets here ahead of time.

A Virtual Event for July

This month’s VIRTUAL EVENT is a visit to Casa Loma in midtown Toronto.

The mansion was built in gothic revival style, and constructed in 1914 for financier Sir Henry Pellatt. The interior of the mansion and the grounds are quite astonishing and being located high above the city affords magnificent views of Toronto.

The mansion is normally open to the public for tours of the building and grounds and there are many different events during the year.

When possible, I hope to organize an actual visit to Casa Loma and maybe one afternoon we can gather together for High Tea!

Enjoy this ten-minute video of Casa Loma and an article on the mansion’s fascinating history.

Check out the Casa Loma website and take a look at an event coming soon: IMAGINE DRAGONS LIGHT FOREST

Hope you enjoy our outing!

A Virtual Tour for June

Have you ever wondered how the online shopping you ordered from Amazon gets to your front door?
This month’s virtual event is a video of the Amazon Fulfillment Centre. It is really quite amazing to watch an example of technology and people working well together. You need to register and choose a time that is convenient for you.
In pre-pandemic times, Amazon offered 60 to 90 minute free public tours of the facility; alas not at present. However, I will certainly include the tour on my Events ‘to do’ list for the near future!
Gillian

Gillian’s Event Ideas for May are all about flowers!

The first idea is a virtual tour of  the Sakura (cherry) trees in High Park.
In 1959 the Japanese ambassador to Canada presented 2,000 cherry trees to the people of Toronto on behalf of the people of Tokyo. The trees were given in appreciation of Toronto having accepted many relocated Japanese Canadians following the end of World War II.

This year High Park will remain open to local pedestrians and cyclists, but vehicles will not be permitted during the peak bloom period. To encourage everyone to stay home and stay safe, the City is offering #BloomAtHome, a 24-hour BloomCam livestream during the peak bloom period. Scroll down that web page to find 5 videos about the blossoms. Here is a history video of the cherry trees.

The second Armchair Event is the Canadian Tulip Festival in Ottawa from May 14-24. The festival began with a special gift. The Dutch royal family took refuge in Ottawa during World War II, and Dutch Princess Margriet was born here in 1943. Two years later, Canadian troops played a key role in liberating the Netherlands. In gratitude, the Dutch government has sent Canada a gift of tulip bulbs every year since 1945. Now this has become the world’s largest tulip festival with over 300,000 tulips. Experience the gift of tulips through the virtual experience at www.tulipfestival.ca

Learn about the History of the Festival or enjoy this video visit from the 2020 festival.

Gillian’s Event Idea for April

Out of your armchair! Spring has sprung and for many of us thoughts turn towards maple syrup! Did you know Canada produces 85% of the world’s maple syrup?
This month’s Probus event suggestion is to sign  up for the Magic of Maple tour to be held at Bradley museum, in Clarkson. Guided tours last around forty minutes, and take place every weekend up until April 18th. Unfortunately at present the tours are already fully booked, however you can register to be on the wait list for this free event. For more information phone 905 615 4860 ext. 2110
Even if you don’t take the maple tour, you can enjoy a stroll back into the past.
Bradley museum is part of a two acre complex known as the Museums of Mississauga. Nestled  in a 70-year-old maple grove on the edge of Lake Ontario you will find heritage properties restored to show the early settlers’ experience and life during the 19th century. Explore around Bradley house and the surrounding buildings and enjoy wooded trails and plenty of green space. Finish your visit with a walk down to the lake along a grassy avenue, bordered by majestic willow trees.
Directions: From Lakeshore Road in Clarkson, turn south at Meadow Wood Road (opposite Dairy Queen!) and continue along the road south until you get to Orr Road on your right. The address of the museum is 1620 Orr Road.
More Info: Here’s a short video of French Canadian fiddler music and dancing, part of the Cabane à Sucre experience;  a short video on the traditional sugar shack in Quebec, and photos of Bradley museum and some of the buildings in the complex.
Hope you enjoy your visit!

Gillian’s Armchair Event Idea for March

Colonel Samuel Smith Park Skating Trail

Visit the lovely Colonel Sam Smith Park situated at the foot of Kipling Avenue and Lakeshore in Etobicoke, where there are scenic walking trails that pass through woods and along a wooded shoreline, providing a haven for birds and wild life.
The land was owned  by Colonel Samuel Smith in the 1800s, and was a weekend getaway for the wealthy in Toronto! The  park is  also historically significant having been the site of the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital. This article and photos tell of the history of the hospital which was built in 1889. The beautiful red brick buildings and impressive power house remain and are worth seeing.
Look for the art installation on the left of the park entrance ‘The Third Garden’.
The ice skating rink is in full swing (see the video), and the skate changing room is the impressive power station with its 100 foot chimney stack. A Tim Hortons nearby occupies what used to be a carriage house! There are car parks on campus.
Enjoy your outing, and reading about some local history!

Watch this great drone video of the trail.

Snowy February seems like a good time to look ahead to spring. Enjoy! (I believe the title is Rest for the Eyes.)

Starry Nights

In 2013 an abandoned foundry in Paris was reimagined as a digital art gallery. In 2019 the beautiful exhibit Van Gogh’s Starry Nights opened. Since then versions of the show have opened in several cities worldwide. Here is a beautiful video from Paris with music performed by Jim van der Zee.

Because of covid 19, the exhibit has been reconfigured as a drive-through experience this year in Toronto. It will reopen on February 11 when the restrictions are lifted. Check out the website for more info or tickets.

January Armchair Idea #1

This is a reminder of the LLM lectures Gillian mentioned in December. Lifelong Learning Mississauga (LLM) is a non-profit organization formed in 2012 to engage older adults in continuous learning by offering informative lecture series and workshops. Their slogan is: SHARE – DISCOVER – ENLIGHTEN

LLM is presenting their first-ever winter Zoom lecture series: The Soviet Experiment will be offered from January 12 to March 2, 2021 from 10:00 am to 12 noon.

Special Places and Remarkable People will be offered from January 14 to March 11, 2021 from 10:00 am to 12 noon.

Each series of eight lectures is priced at $40. For more information visit their website and you can register here.

Armchair Idea #2

Explore the online webinars, videos and podcasts at Western University. Go to the Alumni page and explore the list on the left column. January Outing

Our January idea is a visit to the majestic Trumpeter Swans who over-winter at LaSalle Park in Burlington. The park is home to over 200 Trumpeter Swans from late November until early February. The sight and sounds of so many swans is well-worth the effort of dressing warmly, and venturing out!

For those of us who prefer an armchair visit instead, here is an interesting CBC news video about the LaSalle Park Trumpeter Swans and how they were saved from near extinction.

Directions: The drive from Mississauga takes around thirty minutes. Take the 403 west to exit 79 for Waterdown road, and turn South. Waterdown Road eventually becomes LaSalle Park Road and you continue south until you reach the Lasalle Marina, where there is free parking. From the Marina it’s a short distance  along the boardwalk to meet the swans, and many other water fowl. Energy and weather permitting, you can continue walking further along the shoreline. It’s a pleasant walk, with nice views of the lake, and more inlets where the swans gather. Warning: parts of the paths can get quite slippery !!

Enjoy your visit! Wishing you all happy trails and a peaceful 2021.

October’s Armchair Event

Welcome to the October armchair event featuring a virtual visit to the McMichael Art Collection, in Kleinburg. Gillian had promised a return visit to Gallery in the fall, following our enjoyable visit pre lockdown. So, here’s what she found, by way of a compromise!

August: New Life in Old Buildings

This month’s event is a virtual visit to the Toronto Distillery District via a short video introduction.

Now take a look at the Distillery Website. Open the website and on the left of the screen are several links:

  • Start with Audiovisuals which shows three mini videos taken in 2000 just before development of the area.
  • After that have fun checking out the other links!

Before the forced cancellations, Events Director Gillian had planned to make this visit a Club Event. If you enjoyed the virtual tour you might consider a visit on your own. Entrance to the Distillery District is free and it’s open from 10:00 am until 7:00 pm daily. There is a charge for one hour walking tours. To pre-book call 416 364-1177.

It’s a wonderful area to visit, enjoy! And let us know if you do go to the District so we can share your experience with other PROBUS members. Contact crprobus@gmail.com

Hannaford Street Silver Band: December 10th was a magical start to the Christmas season for the group of us who attended the concert ‘Winter’s Song’, featuring the Hannaford Street Silver Band and the Bach Children’s Chorus. It was held at the impressive Yorkminster Park Baptist Church in Toronto. The Hannaford Street Silver Band is a group of professional musicians with a love of the brass band repertoire. Their enthusiasm was evident as they performed rousing renditions of Christmas music and accompanied the choirs. The children’s choir featured over 100 children between the ages of 8 and 14 performing in three ensembles. The children sang beautifully a variety of songs and carols, excellently choreographed . What struck many of us was the diversity of the children in the choirs, all of them singing their hearts out!  A wonderful evening to remember.
