President’s Message

I said in my June remarks in CURRENTS that I expected to do more land exploits now that the sailboat has gone. My most recent trip last week was to Calgary for the North American MGB Convention. I flew out there, did not drive, although some people did from Texas, Florida and California. You can retrofit air conditioning to a fifty-year-old MGB which many people in the southern United States do.

If you have never been to Calgary, I thoroughly recommend it. In my working career I spent time there, but was always working and had little time for sightseeing. This time as tourists, we did about a two hundred kilometers drive through the foothills, which included the Highwood Pass at 7,328 feet, supposedly the highest paved road in Canada. The scenery was absolutely spectacular and far less traffic than going to Banff. Most of the smoke had cleared. There are few settlements. I saw wildlife such as big horn sheep and one grizzly bear. Many domestic cattle were grazing by the roadside or as my Aussie friends say “The Long Paddock”. I was told not to make it so long between visits in future.

Last month, we had a speaker from The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. This time, I went to their competition, The Bomber Command Museum of Canada, in Nanton, Alberta. They also have a Canadian built Lancaster, not airworthy, but complete with engines and can taxi. At times, they bring it out from inside the museum hanger and run up the engines at night right alongside the highway through town. Inside the museum, there were several military aircraft exhibits. Their main project at the moment is restoration of a Canadian-built Mosquito fighter/ bomber. If any of you are interested in this sort of thing, I very much recommend a visit, but check the opening hours.

Next trip I am planning is to Lake Placid in September. Trying to keep moving.

Finally, a reminder that membership renewals of $75.00 are due by September 30.
