CURRENTS is the official newsletter of the Credit River PROBUS Club. It is published monthly and emailed to members to keep them abreast of club activities and to promote the club’s central objectives. Submissions are welcome as are new ideas and should be emailed to Lydia Koop, lydia4@cogeco.ca.

President’s Message

As I write this in mid-February, we have just shoveled our driveway for the very first time this winter. This has been a most exceptional winter so far, and we may yet pay for the lack of snow cover, with poor crop yields this coming summer.yields summer.

Brian and I enjoyed a recent Probus “Event”, a visit to the Peel Art Museum and Archives (PAMA) in Brampton. Our tour was self-guided, as we could not guarantee enough participants, and the available guide was assigned to a school group. You will find more about our visit elsewhere in this issue of Currents.

One hears a lot of grumbling these days about ever-increasing prices, and indeed we feel the sting whenever we go to the supermarket. Brian and I find ourselves shopping around more, taking advantage of bargains when we happen to find them, and ensuring that no food goes to waste. Like everyone, we want to get value for our money.

You may have joined our club for the speakers at monthly meetings, to participate in Rick’s travel programmes, or to participate in one of our “Activities” such as bridge or golf. But whatever the original reason, as your President, I would like to ensure that with your Club membership dues, you are getting value for your money. I think we have a great speaker line-up. In addition, we have a range of activities, and are always open to new ones – many have been suggested, including biking, beer tasting and subject specific discussion groups, such as sport. They would all be welcome within the Club’s umbrella, but we need someone to start the ball rolling. Could that be you?

We had several constructive suggestions for Events at our AGM, and Anne and Brian are working on them – in fact one, the PAMA visit, was a suggestion from the floor. I hope to see greater participation in these events in the months to come. Several events are set up already, and the list of suggestions is NOT closed. Some of the best excursions come about through “someone who knows someone…”. One local club had a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour of the airport, but it came about through a personal connection, I understand such tours are not generally encouraged. Are you that “someone”? Can you help arrange a tour or visit that would be of interest to our members? If so, please speak to Anne or Brian. Our club is what we all make it, and we can all help each other get our “money’s worth”.

By the time you are reading this, the Spring Equinox on March 19 will be only a few days away. The days
are noticeably lengthening, and our clocks spring forward an hour on March 10. So, find a maple syrup
event to enjoy, and take advantage of what Credit River Probus has to offer.
