CURRENTS September 2023

CURRENTS is the official newsletter of the Credit River PROBUS Club. It is published monthly and emailed to members to keep them abreast of club activities and to promote the club’s central objectives. Submissions are welcome as are new ideas and should be emailed to Nancy Hori, nancy.hori@sympatico.ca.

President’s Message

Summer officially ends September 22. To me, that is too soon. After almost three years of minimal activities due to COVID-19 restrictions, I am still catching up with travel. Let’s hope we do not have a resurgence of COVID-19 to put a damper on things. Get all your fall shots if you are eligible.
October is our AGM when we introduce the new members of the Management Committee and elevate Ada Dixon to the position of President. I am sure you will all support Ada, but also remember that under PROBUS rules we also have to rotate fifty percent of the Management Committee every year so they also need your support, especially the newcomers. One of my future roles as immediate Past President is to line up candidates for the Management Committee in 2024/2025, so please make my job easier by volunteering for a two-year term.

Our club operates under some specific constitution rules and bylaws set by PROBUS Canada. They were revised in July of this year and we believe that we are compliant with virtually all of them. The minor changes that were needed will be published in CURRENTS and voted on at the AGM. One very significant rule change that does not affect us is that all new PROBUS clubs accredited after July 14, 2023, shall be open to all genders. Any single-gender club accredited prior to July 14, 2023, shall be exempt from this requirement. We are still able to set our own limits on membership numbers, wait list and women/men ratio.

I said in August my next planned trip was to Lake Placid in September. I was mistaken, and instead spent a weekend in Kingston along with members of the Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto MG Clubs celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the first MG. Outbound, it was a dash along the 407/401 but on the return took a
route that I recommend, if you want a more sedate route that in many places takes you right alongside Lake Ontario. From Kingston take Hwy 33, and use the Glenora Ferry (free), continue on Hwy 33 across Prince Edward County and join Hwy 2 to Port Hope where you turn off of Hwy 2 and take Lakeshore Road through Port Britain, Wesleyville and Port Granby. Small communities from a bygone era. You cross a unique timber railroad bridge and arrive at Bond Head from where it is an easy entrance to the 401/407. I would use it on one of my PROBUS club drives but it is the other side of Yonge Street!

I think the idea of having a jester is great. It certainly relieves the president of one of their monthly headaches. We are still looking for a jester for the September meeting.

Enjoy the rest of the summer but do not forget to renew your membership by September 30. It is not a threat but the reality is that we have members on a wait list anxious to join and a further list of people wanting to join the wait list. If you have decided not to renew your membership for whatever reason, that is your choice, but please do let our Membership Director Pat Everitt know so we can quickly open up an opportunity for a wait list member to join. Thank you.
