CURRENTS is the official newsletter of the Credit River PROBUS Club. It is published monthly and emailed to members to keep them abreast of club activities and to promote the club’s central objectives. Submissions are welcome as are new ideas and should be emailed to Lydia Koop, lydia4@cogeco.ca.
President’s Message
Spring is in the air, and there has been much happening through the month of April. On the 6th, about 20 club members and friends visited the Lions Club Foundation Dog Guides Open House, which was most informative. It is amazing how the lives of those with different challenges can be helped by well-trained dog companions, with the number of possible roles the dogs can fill continuing to expand. You will find more details elsewhere in Currents.
On April 8 Brian and I experienced our second total solar eclipse, this time at Long Beach, on Lake Erie. The first was in Tennessee in 2017, but for some reason the Lake Erie event was much more spectacular – inky blackness at totality, followed by an extraordinary orange band across the horizon as the end of the eclipse approached across the lake. April 11 was movie afternoon, an activity now running monthly again, courtesy of Rick Scott and the Walden Circle Retirement Residence. Great movies, comfortable seats, pop, and popcorn available – what’s not to like?
On April 13th, Brian and I followed up on one of the “Events” that are circulated regularly by Ann Fabierkiewicz and attended the Peel Region Science Fair at UTM. This was the first full scale event after several years being “dark” due to Covid and organizational issues. 70 young students presented 50 exhibits – when asked about their displays, they were so bubbling over with enthusiasm, they had to be reminded to slow down for old fogies like us! Gone are the days of “volcanoes” made with soda and vinegar – the senior winning exhibit, from a Grade 12 student, was entitled: “Developing AI (Artificial Intelligence) Algorithms to Quantify Pan-Cancer Immunotherapy Response and Optimizing Treatments”. Sorry, I cannot explain it. If news broadcasts sometimes cause us to associate young people with gang violence and crime, this event was a great antidote.
On April 16, seventeen Probians visited the Fisher Rare Book Library at the University of Toronto – more details elsewhere in this issue. Of course, in addition to all of these happenings, the Ramblers have been rambling, the River-Walkers have been patrolling the Credit River, and the other activities described in Currents have been proceeding regularly.
With a club membership of 200, the number of regular participants in Club activities sometimes seems rather low – I would encourage everyone, and younger members especially, to participate, enjoy what is on offer, and get your money’s worth from your membership!
