This year at the PROBUS District Meeting, several questions were raised about the insurance coverage for our club. Axel Breuer took on the task of reviewing it, and we were able to send information to PROBUS Canada that will be informative for all clubs.
Here is a brief overview for Credit River (CRP) members:
CRP maintains liability insurance to protect the club and its directors from potential liability claims associated with the discharge of their duties for CRP. The insurance does not extend beyond the confines of CRP activities.
Members of CRP are NOT insured by this policy. Instead, members are typically covered by their personal homeowner or rental insurance policy and their automobile insurance. However, the breadth of their liability coverage varies between policies. It is important to review your coverage and to seek guidance from your insurance broker about policy limitations and liability coverage. That might include, among others, the amount of monetary protection and the many exclusions.
In addition, we remind members that the “standard of behaviour” is also governed by the nature of the activity. For example, there is a higher standard imposed on hosts and attendees of events where alcohol is served, and you should become aware of legal host responsibilities when serving alcohol in your home.
If anyone has additional questions about CRP’s coverage, please address them to the President.
