PROBUS Background
History Of PROBUS
PROBUS Clubs originated in England in 1965, organized by a Rotary president as an informal luncheon group for retirees. Following their success, the Caterham Rotary Club organized a meeting for retired professionals and businessmen the next year. They adopted the name of PROBUS, taking the first three letters of PROfessional and BUSiness. PROBUS has since spread throughout the world with over 4,000 clubs worldwide. It was introduced to New Zealand in 1974, Australia in 1976, and Canada in 1987. Today some PROBUS Clubs are still sponsored by local Rotary Clubs although Credit River PROBUS is not one of them.
Purpose
The purpose of PROBUS Clubs is “to stimulate thought, interest and participation in activities” and to provide fellowship and the opportunity to meet new people. Clubs are simple in structure, free of the constraints and obligations of service clubs, and involve members at a minimal cost. PROBUS Clubs can be all men, all women, or gender combined.
